About Rawlings

About us - then and now

Since 1850 ...

... when William Rawlings established the company to collect and wash empty glass bottles to sell on to wine merchants in the south west of England, Rawlings & Son has been involved in the glass industry in one way or another.

Rawlings became an international glass dealer when an agency agreement with a German bottle manufacturer established the company as their principal British importer.

Leonard Routley, who joined as a 15 year old schoolboy in 1927, eventually took over as sole owner and during World War II, Rawlings' plant became the central point for the collection and re-distribution of Ministry of Food bottles.

After the war ...

... when the re-use of bottles became less common, Rawlings & Son started to import glass from manufacturers all over the world and supplying glass packaging to food and drinks producers.

So flexibility and change have been key factors since the company began. We've had to adapt our business to the changes around us, and this philosophy continues today.

Now ...

... we're proud of the commitment of our team, many of whom have been with us for years. We know this is quite unusual - and it certainly gives our customers confidence in us because they deal with the same project managers, the same office staff and the same directors every time they call.
